There are many electric horse fence options because an electric horse fence does many jobs. At its simplest, a horse fence merely runs along an existing barrier fence to keep horses from pressing against the barrier fence, chewing on it, or leaning on it. At its most complex it serves as a complete stand-alone fence that replaces the barrier fence with firmly anchored posts and multiple runs of highly visible polytape, polyrope, or polybraid.

Between these types come all sorts of intermediate electric fences: small portable paddocks or corrals; longer movable electric fences; and temporary electric fences that may be in place a while but that are not designed as permanent stand-alone electric horse fences. These various fences, besides simply keeping horses in restricted areas, are commonly dedicated to establishing exercise areas, preventing undergrazing or overgrazing, subdividing existing pastures, separating horses from one another, and keeping the animals away from natural or man-made hazards. Fences representing many of these types, including everything from portable paddocks to sturdy 5-foot stand-alone fences, can be found in our Kit Solutions section.

The electric fence components best-suited to any specific project will depend not only on the type of electric fence but also on circumstances like the nature of the horses or other animals involved, the length of the electric fence, climate considerations, grounding conditions, how often the fence will need to move, and so forth. The pages that follow describe a number of basic options.
