Fi-Shock Solar Shock 440 (SS-440), Low Impedance Solar Electric Fence Charger, UL Listed, 0.05 Joules (0.14 Stored Joules)
The Fi-Shock SS-440 is rated at 0.14 stored joules, but when it is set up in the field its actual output is commonly about 0.05 joules. This means that the shock administered by the SS-440 is typically more of a small zap than a jolt, and so it really has only one legitimate horse fence role–that of protecting existing wooden and other barrier horse fences by discouraging horses from chewing or leaning on them. However, because it minimizes the potential for startling horses in areas with limited space to run, it can often perform this task better than more powerful electric fence chargers. Voltage data: The SS-440 can maintain up to 8000 volts across its terminals. However, even a very small imperfection, such as a minimal 500-ohm weed burden, will reduce this voltage to about 1500 volts, still plenty to shock small animals but not enough to reliably shock horses. Other animals: If one can keep weeds off the fence, the SS-440 is useful for keeping dogs out of vegetable gardens; it is also useful (if the fence is combined with a short barrier fence) for protecting gardens from cats and a medley of small wild animals including woodchucks, rabbits, raccoons, opossums, and others. General data: The weatherproof and portable SS-440 features an impact-resistant solar panel. It also comes with a 4-volt gel-type battery, instructions, and a manufacturer’s limited two-year warranty.
