One is sometimes tempted to regard solar electric fence chargers as creators of maintenance-free fencing in hard to reach areas. That temptation should be resisted, because electric horse fences can become dysfunctional in many ways if left to themselves, and all that the solar electric fence charger really does is avoid the need to continually monitor, recharge, and replace batteries.
All solar-powered chargers have three components: The charger itself, the battery it draws its power from, and the solar panel that charges up the battery. The solar panel is typically the most costly part, so the designers of solar-powered chargers tend to keep the power down (generally at or below 0.5 joules) so as to limit the panel’s size. The largest solar-powered chargers, while relatively weak compared to the stronger AC-powered models, have enough shocking ability to contain livestock, exclude predators, and deal with moderate weed burdens.
