About Our Battery-Powered Electric Fence Chargers
To see which chargers are suitable for your electric fence project, scan our Table of Chargers for Specific Animals and Situations. We have selected several low-key battery-powered electric fence chargers suited for use with temporary horse fences and small enclosures that can use several different kinds of batteries. The Zareba Yellow Jacket, Dare DS 140, and Dare DSX 140 can both operate off 4 D cells (flashlight batteries), a 6-volt battery, or a 12-volt battery. Similarly, the Dare DS 300 can use either a 6-volt battery or a 12-volt battery. For campers who want to deliver more of a jolt than can be had from the 0.35 joule DSX 140, we recommend the 0.75 joule DS 300, which weighs 2.5 pounds, and Parmak’s 6 volt gel battery (product 01-17) which weighs only 6 pounds and has enough lasting power (14 ampere hours) to keep the DS 300 running for several days. The two other battery-powered electric fence chargers that we offer (Parmak’s EM-200 and Magnum 12 U.O.) both require a 12-volt battery. It should be noted that 6-volt and 12-volt batteries made for boats or golf carts usually work better with electric fence chargers than do car-type batteries, because car batteries are designed to be continually recharged, while marine or golf cart batteries can be more fully discharged without damage. Also, those planning to use battery-powered electric fence chargers in cold conditions should be aware that D cells do not work at near or below freezing temperatures and that gel-type batteries, like the two Parmak products 01-17 and 01-17A offered here, are apt to be far more effective and trouble-free than non-gel batteries in these conditions.
